Developing Effective Strategic Plans


Financial Services


To create a strategic plan to be used as a platform for action, in response to a new regulatory requirement.

  • Taking a structured approach, collating relevant data and crystallising their strategic options.
  • Organising a ‘strategic planning coordination team’ for cross-departmental buy-in and executive ownership.
  • A clear, actionable strategy that drove understanding across the organisation.

Implementing Strategic Initiatives

Making strategic initiatives happen requires sustained focus and effort, with key stages to manage. Ensuring decisions are robust is essential, and developing clear, credible and informed business cases is one way in which this can be achieved.




Helping a specialist hospital with key strategic objectives for its future direction and motivating stakeholders.

  • Creation of a concise strategic plan that served as a platform and ongoing reference for action.
  • Development of several powerful business cases that increased their capacity to treat patients, including adding external context and scenario options to their future projections.
  • Development of a ‘demand and capacity’ model to help the hospital project long-term capacity requirements.

Strengthening Strategic Capabilities

Developing strategic thinking abilities – and the confidence to use them – is becoming increasingly important as organisations are forced to adopt dynamic approaches to deal with uncertainty.


Healthcare, Financial Services

  • Individual mentoring and tailored organisational training.
  • Three month programme of workshops, project work and coaching for a financial services organisation, seeking to improve the strategic abilities of one key department.
  • Developed a structured planning process for a health services organisation encouraged clinical specialties to articulate opportunities to develop their patient services and quantify the implications of these.

Helping People and Organisations Learn About Strategy

Strategy can appear complicated but in my talks and workshops I demystify strategy and bring it back to first principles (in essence it’s about perspectives, questions and conversations).

I have presented Masterclasses, given a guest lecture to Business Masters students at a University in my role as a Fellow of the Strategic Planning Society, run workshops and hosted panel discussions about strategy.

I have learnt much – and continue to learn – about organisational strategy. My aim is to share this knowledge to help others practice strategy with confidence, and see people and organisations thrive as a result.
